CUNY to Launch New Email Security Tool: Proofpoint

As part of its continued effort to reduce cybersecurity risk and improve system resiliency, CUNY is implementing Proofpoint. Proofpoint is a cybersecurity platform that will reduce cyber threats that target our email. Proofpoint reduces susceptibility to phishing, social engineering, and email attacks. Proofpoint scans emails for known security threats like spam, phishing, and malware, and quarantines suspicious emails to prevent them from reaching our inboxes.

On April 21, CUNY will implement Proofpoint to proactively protect all CUNY email accounts from spam, suspicious, and malicious email.

Because Proofpoint may have quarantined an email in error, on April 21 you will begin receiving emails from Proofpoint (proofpoint-digest@cuny.edu) containing a digest listing the quarantined emails that were not delivered.

Receiving these Proofpoint digests allows you to review quarantined email and act on any that were quarantined in error:

  • If you do not need the quarantined email, there is no need to do anything. Quarantined emails will be permanently deleted in 30 days.
  • If an email was quarantined in error, you can do either of the following:
    • Release the email to your inbox so you can read and respond to it in Outlook.
    • Add the sender to your Safe Sender list so future emails from this sender are delivered to your inbox.

The Proofpoint digests include directions to release email from quarantine. Please see the FAQs and knowledge articles in CUNY IT Help if you want more information on managing quarantined emails in your Proofpoint digest.

Additional information

  • You will only receive a Proofpoint digest if there are new quarantined emails since the last digest.
  • You can manage all your currently quarantined emails by clicking on the Manage My Account link in the Proofpoint digest.
  • Any member of a shared email account can act on the emails in the Proofpoint digest sent to the shared email account.

Please contact the IT Service Desk if you have issues managing the emails listed in your Proofpoint digests.
