About the Episode
Dr. Brenda M. Greene interviews American playwright and actress Dominique Morisseau. Morisseau and Greene discuss her life as a playwright, her motivation for writing socially conscious plays, the themes in her three-cycle play The Detroit Projects, and the Tony Award-nominated musical Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations. They also discuss Morisseau’s work as the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant,” the challenges facing Black playwrights and screenwriters in theater, film and Hollywood, and the ways in which social justice issues have impacted the works of Black playwrights and screenwriters.

About the Guest
Dominique Morisseau is an award-winning American playwright and actress. She has created more than nine plays, three of which are part of a cycle titled The Detroit Projects. She is a recipient of the MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant” for 2018. Morisseau began her career as a poetry speaker and began writing plays in college. Morisseau is alumna of The Public Theater Emerging Writer’s Group, Women’s Project Lab and Lark Playwrights Workshop, and has developed work at Sundance Lab, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and Eugene O’Neil Playwrights Conference. She was listed as one of the Top 20 Most Produced Playwrights in America and is currently a story editor for the television series Shameless on Showtime.
