About the Episode
Dr. Brenda Greene interviews Dasan Ahanu, an award-winning poet, spoken-word artist, educator, songwriter, playwright, public speaker, organizer, curator, and emcee. Dr. Greene and Ahanu discuss his work with Harvard University’s Hip Hop Archive and his career as an artist and scholar. They talk about his advocacy in social justice, his creative work, and the current state of Black theater and performance. Ahanu also reads a poem from his forthcoming book, Shackled Freedom: Black Lives in the American South (Willow Books, 2020).

About the Guest
Dasan Ahanu is currently a visiting lecturer at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Rothwell Mellon Program Director for Creative Futures with Carolina Performing Arts. He is co-founder and managing director of Black Poetry Theatre, a Durham-based theater company that creates and produces original poetry and spoken-word productions. Ahanu served as artist-in-residence and assistant professor of English at Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, N.C., and he was the 2015-2016 Nasir Jones Fellow with the Hip Hop Archive & Research Institute at Harvard University’s Hutchins Center for African & African American Research. He is a founding member and coach of North Carolina’s Bull City Slam Team and an active participant in poetry slams who has competed regionally and nationally. He has released numerous recordings and has been featured on national radio and TV. His writing was published in the St. James Encyclopedia of Hip Hop Culture and Oxford American magazine. Ahanu is also the author of three books, Everything Worth Fighting For: An Exploration of Being Black in America (2016), Freedom Papers (2012), and The Innovator (2010).
