About the Program

Dr.  Brenda Greene discusses with Professor Ron Howell, his biography on Bertram L. Baker, Boss of Black Brooklyn: The Life and Times of Bertram L. Baker (Fordham University Press, 2018). The late Bertram Baker, the grandfather of Ron Howell, immigrated to the United States from St. Nevis in 1915.  He was the first Black person to hold a public office in Brooklyn and was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1948. Greene and Howell discuss the role that Baker played in Black politics in Brooklyn and highlights of Bertram’s life.  Howell’s story is unique in that he brings his personal perspective to the life of man who had a major impact on Brooklyn politics.
