Three Cougars Earn CUNYAC Post-Season Basketball Honors

Three members of the Medgar Evers College Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams received postseason recognition from the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) on Thursday, February 14. Justin Sutton (Guard, Junior) was named a First Team CUNYAC/Army ROTC All-Star for Men’s Basketball. Joancarlo Bonilla (Guard, sophomore) and Jessycca Myers (Forward/Center, sophomore) were named to the CUNYAC/Army ROTC Sportsmanship Teams for the men’s and women’s teams.

Sutton led CUNYAC in scoring with 22.3 points per game. Sutton was also 20th in the conference with 4.7 rebounds per game, 14th with 2.8 assists per game, eighth with a 44.2 field goal percentage, and second with an 80.3 free-throw percentage. During the 2018-2019 season, Sutton not only became a 1,000-point career scorer for Medgar Evers, but also rose to second place on the school’s all-time scoring list this season with 1,451 career points.

Bonilla finished the regular season on a tear; he shot 15-22 on three point attempts and averaged 31.5 points per game over the Cougars’ final two games. Myers finished the season averaging 12.6 points per game, 8.7 rebounds per game and 2.5 steals per game and totaled five double-doubles.

Both the All-Star and Sportsmanship Teams are named by a committee of conference coaches of the respective sport. A student-athlete must participate in 75% of the team’s contests in order to be selected.
