Medgar Wiley Evers To Be Honored With Panel Discussion

Civil Rights icon’s daughter Reena Evers-Everett to be lead conversation

On Thursday, November 16, Medgar Evers College will be the site of a panel discussion exploring the legacy of the school’s namesake along with his widow Myrlie Evers-Williams and their fight for justice and equality. The conversation will be led by Mrs. Reena Evers-Everett, daughter of the late leader along with historian and Civil Rights educator Lance Wheeler, who has studied and presented the history and legacy of the Evers family nationally.

This commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the assassination of Medgar Evers will find Evers-Everett sharing her account of the legacy of her parents and how she is currently working to advance their work through the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute.  It is important that students at Medgar Evers College understands the significance of the name and people behind the institution at which they attend. For Dr. Jesse Kane, Senior Vice President for Student Success and Enrollment Management, it’s a chance for members of the MEC family to get first-hand exposure to the importance of the huge imprint that Medgar Wiley Evers left behind.

“I am excited that students and other members of the Medgar Evers College community will have the opportunity to hear about the legacy of Medgar Evers and Myrlie Evers Williams, who both are iconic figures in the fight for civil rights of Black and prioritized people in the United States,” Kane said.

The event will be taking place from 11 a.m. to noon at the Edison O. Jackson Auditorium located at 1638 Bedford Ave. (AB-1) in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
