Medgar Evers College Receives Grant from Thurgood Marshall College Fund and the Association of College and University Educators
Thursday, February 18 – The Office of Academic Affairs is excited to announce that Medgar Evers College has been awarded a prestigious grant from the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TCMF) and the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) in “Excellence in Online Instruction.”
This grant was awarded to only four HBCU/PBI institutions across the country. Associate Provost, H. Michael Dreher, is the Principal Investigator (PI) on the grant.
From the submission Dr. Dreher wrote:
“We have a culture of online faculty who want to learn more and improve their teaching. The award of the grant to Medgar would have an immediate positive impact on the institution and indicate to students that there are increasing efforts by more faculty to improve our online teaching to them. We note that recently there have been several HBCUs with significant resources receiving large grants. To improve more equity in higher education for minority students, it is equally important to fund other PBI, HBCU, and Hispanic serving institutions who have far fewer resources who could be transformed overnight.”
Two cohorts of 30 faculty (60 total) from each selected institution will participate in ACUE’s yearlong, independently validated pedagogical training program, Effective Online Teaching Practices (EOTP). This course addresses 25 core teaching competencies and recommends hundreds of evidence-based instructional practices demonstrated to improve student engagement, persistence, learning, and rates of course completion. Faculty who satisfy course requirements will earn a Certificate of Effective College Instruction, awarded in collaboration with the American Council on Education.
