As part of the Somos Inc. New York Conference held in Albany on March 8, 2025, Medgar Evers College faculty member Professor Teri Coaxum co-moderated a public policy panel titled “Game-Changing Opportunity: Empowering Small Businesses with AI.”

Coaxum, an adjunct professor of Public Administration, was joined as a co-moderator by New York State Assemblyman Erik Martin Dilan (D), a legislative sponsor who represents the 54th District (Bedford Stuyvesant/Bushwick/Cypress Hills/East New York).

Rounding out the panel were Assemblyman Clyde Vanel (D) representing the 33rd District (Cambria Heights/St. Albans/Hollis/Queens Village/Bellerose), Dr. Havidán Rodriguez (SUNY Albany President), Dr. Jackeline D. Mejias-Fuertas (Adjunct Business Professor, Brookdale Community College) and syndicated radio host Rich Valdés (America Tonight).

With the panel’s thrust being how AI can be a game-changer for entrepreneurs and small businesses, the focus was on practical strategies that maximize the innovation, impact and long-term success that comes with utilizing this technology properly.

Panelists shared powerful insights around strategies revolving around marketing, inventory and customer service with the goal of small businesses working smarter, streamlining operations and boosting profitability.

It was not only a rich experience for attendees, but for Coaxum as well.

“I had the honor to organize and co-moderate the Game-Changing Opportunity Workshop,” she said. “The energy in the room was incredible. Entrepreneurs and community leaders engaged deeply, walking away with real strategies to leverage AI for growth and efficiency. It’s inspiring to see how technology can open doors for small businesses, and I’m grateful to be part of the conversation shaping the future.”
