MEC Community Council Hosts 16th Annual Scholarship and Leadership Awards Luncheon

On Saturday, April 27, the Community Council of Medgar Evers College (MEC) hosts its annual spring scholarship and leadership awards luncheon. For the past 16 years, attendees have gathered to pay tribute to those who have provided outstanding service in their professions, to support the scholarship program for MEC students, and to enjoy great food, fellowship, and live music provided by Prof. Roman Mitchell and the MEC Jazz Ensemble.

This year’s leadership awards will be presented to:

  • Trevor Hyde, Jr., Pastor, Berean Baptist Church
  • DeCosta Headley, CEO, Strong Power Business Consulting, Inc.
  • Terrence Richard Blackman, Dean, School of Science, Health, and Technology

This year’s youth leadership awards will be presented to two exceptional students from MEC Preparatory School’s class of 2019:

  • Chavelle Carty
  • Demola Ogunnaike

The 2019 scholarship recipients will be announced at the luncheon.

The Community Council for Medgar Evers College was established in 1970. The visionary founders were ordinary citizens and community leaders who saw the need for an institution of higher education in central Brooklyn. After many discussions and negotiations with city and state officials, their persistence triumphed and Medgar Evers College was established.

That legacy continues today as President Katie Davis, council members, and community representatives (including residents, local organizations, MEC students and the Faculty Senate, as well as elected officials from central Brooklyn) provide direction by working to aid students who excel academically, but need financial support to complete their studies at MEC.

Council Vice President Anne Bush urges everyone to “join the council and participate in our activities to help make a difference in the lives of MEC Students and the larger community.”
