MEC Student Receives Peter Jennings Laurel Award Scholarship

Medgar Evers College student Tamisha Bird is among 11 City University of New York (CUNY) students who received the Peter Jennings Laurel Award Scholarship. Now in its 17th year, the scholarship recognizes individuals who have overcome extreme hardship to earn a high school credential and plan to continue their studies at a CUNY college. While they prepared for the High School Equivalency Exam, some of these students had to juggle the demands of parenting and work, and others first first had to learn to read and write in English.

Tamisha Bird, who is majoring in science at MEC, enrolled in the High School Equivalency program at the Adult Learning Center at the College. Bird said her experience in the program encouraged her to pursue her degree at MEC. Bird said that Medgar Evers College “shows me the importance of my culture and the people who paved the way for students of color to obtain a college degree.” You can read more about her story, and the other scholarship recipients, here.
