Mayor, Borough President Visit SPCD Cornerstone

Medgar Evers Cornerstone at Van Dyke, an after-school program and youth center managed by MEC’s School for Professional and Community Development (SPCD), was chosen by NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio at the site to launch his new Safety in Every Zip Code initiative. The initiative promises to increase police presence and tackle quality of life issues in high crime areas. The Cornerstone at Van Dyke was also host for a two-day Community Conversation on Policing and Social Justice, which included the mayor, NYC Police Commissioner James O’Neil and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

The Cornerstone at Van Dyke is one of the six Cornerstone programs run by the SPCD. SPCD recently secured a $650,000 grant renewal for the Cornerstones it manages. Dr. Evelyn Castro is the dean of SPCD.
