Malik Yoba To Visit BRC

On Wednesday, November 15, Medgar Evers College Brooklyn Recovery Corps (BRC) Internship Program will hold its monthly workshop titled The Impact and Benefits of Interning With Small Businesses from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1650 Bedford Ave. The BRC’s featured guest is Dr. Malik Yoba, who is an American actor best known for his roles in New York Undercover and Why Did I Get Married? Outside of acting, Yoba is the Founder and CEO of Yoba Development, which is a diversified portfolio company specializing in real estate, education, and media. They are committed to building human capacity through education while simultaneously pursuing sustainable and affordable mixed-use development projects in transitioning neighborhoods.

The BRC is a paid internship program created in 2021 where students are placed with small businesses and not for profits in Central Brooklyn through funding made available by former Mayor Bill DeBlasio’s Juneteenth Economic Recovery Bill and continues to receive support from current Mayor Eric Adams and the New York City Council.

Yoba will be giving advice to would-be entrepreneurs about scaling their own businesses using internships and what goes into finding qualified people to fill those roles along with the importance of pursuing internships, unpaid and otherwise. For Yoba, the two driving lessons to success he hopes to impart is the importance of networking and accruing knowledge to help achieve your goals.

“If there is one thing I want students to get it’s that your network is your net worth,” Yoba said. “When I was given a seat at the table in the real estate development game in 2007, I spent the majority of my time being quiet and silently learning, hanging out on the sites, going to meetings and being on finance calls. And while I always felt pretty well networked, I didn’t have as many contacts in banking, government, real estate and in the federal contracting space. Now I have people advocating for me, when I’m not even in the room. And that is extraordinary.”
