Inaugural Black Greek Basketball Invitational provides fun, serves tremendous cause

On Saturday, April 15, the Transition Academy and the Department of Athletics hosted its Inaugural Black Greek Basketball Tournament fundraiser at the Cougars Cave on the campus of Medgar Evers College.  This event featured members of two Black Greek letter organization (BGLO)/fraternity teams and one team comprised of Medgar Evers College staff and alumni. In what was an exciting day of basketball, Team Medgar Evers captured the championship, turning back New York Sigma in the title game.

Former student-athletes Keison McIntosh and JoanCarlo Bonilla were recognized after the game. McIntosh took home the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award, with Bonilla earning a spot on the All-Tournament team. Mousa Sinera, the NCAA Division III leader for rebounds in a single game, also participated on Team Medgar Evers.The Black Greek Basketball Tournament fundraiser was held with the goal of raising money to support Medgar Evers College students facing financial instability.  The Transition Academy at Medgar Evers College was established to help students navigate through the complex process of the homeless system and work on streamlining the search for adequate housing. Services include a food pantry, food vouchers, transportation to school, counseling referrals, SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) applications and job placement.
