Combat Hunger Week

With the holiday season in full swing, many are preoccupied with planning their menus for family celebrations.  Unfortunately, for some of our students figuring out their next meal is a daily dilemma. With Thanksgiving approaching, Medgar Evers College’s Transition Academy hosted Combat Hunger Week to help students who are facing food insecurity.  Thanks to generous donations from grocery store chain Stop & Shop, Food Bank for New York City, and the Developing Restoring Enriching Advancing Many (D.R.E.A.M.) Foundation several days last week, the Transition Academy was able to provide students with hot meals, sandwiches, canned goods, and a Thanksgiving meal consisting of turkey and other side dish items. The food was distributed Monday through Saturday at the Cougar Country Food Pantry on the third floor of the Student Services building. The Transition Academy had more than 450 turkeys to give away to students.

During Combat Hunger Week the Transition Academy, and its effort to help students who struggle with food insecurity, was featured last on PIX11. The news station visited several food pantries, including the Cougar Country Food Pantry, for a story on food insecurity in New York City and the resources that are available to help people. The news crew interviewed Interim Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Alexis McLean, Student Life Specialist Waleek Boone, and student Chivell Mendoza.  You can view the story using this link.
