College Now's STEM Students Study the Environment

Local high school students who are a part of Medgar Evers College’s College Now program had an opportunity to learn outside of the classroom. The students who are enrolled in College Now’s STEM program visited the Newton Creek Waste Water Treatment plant in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Dr. Oluwaseun Salako, lecturer Joanne Dittersdorf, and teaching assistant Adeyemi Aderemi accompanied them.

As part of the STEM program, the students take classes in basic chemistry and environmental health issues. The visit allowed students to experience real-life environmental challenges they learned about in class. The visit began with a brief introduction to water supply and wastewater management in New York City. Additionally, the students learned about the different watersheds located in southeastern New York State that supply the city with the water used every day. Following a tour of the treatment plant, students learned about internship and job opportunities available at the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.
