Hosted by Executive Director Lurie Daniel Favors, the Center for Law and Social Justice (CLSJ) Summertime Gala was held on June 28, 2023 at Williamsburg’s Giando on the Water. Favors urged guests to support CLSJ’s work at this multi-generational event that shone a spotlight on the vital work of the CLSJ in advancing racial justice and empowering communities by providing legal advocacy, conducting community education campaigns, facilitating research and building organizing capacity on behalf of New Yorkers of African descent and the disenfranchised. The evening also served as a tribute to founding Executive Director Esmeralda Simmons whose was a major force in getting the CLSJ off the ground in 1986. Tributes to Simmons and her pioneering work poured in from elected officials, former colleagues, allies including Dr. Patricia Ramsey – president of Medgar Evers College – and Favors herself, who called Simmons a profound influence in her life.

Keynote speaker Lumumba Bandele praised Simmons for her guidance and support, then charged the audience with following in her footsteps by fighting the country’s rising tide of racism and fascism. The highlight of the evening came when Simmons and Favors engaged in a powerful conversation, symbolizing the passing of the torch from one visionary leader to another. During the conversation, Favors highlighted three key CLSJ initiatives: Advocacy Academy, Our Future Our Vote, and the Esmeralda Simmons Pre-Law Program, all critical to shaping the future of racial justice. Afterward, attendees partied with a purpose, grooving to a catchy musical mix of songs from the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s with a breathtaking view of the East River serving as the background. The gala was a smashing success, leaving lasting memories of a night filled with purpose, inspiration, and a renewed commitment to building power in Black communities. CLSJ thanks everyone who attended and supported the organization, helping to mark a milestone in the journey toward equity and justice.
