Celebrating Black History Month
Black History Month programming is underway at Medgar Evers College with programs that celebrate the social, economic, and cultural contributions of African Americans.
On February 10, the School of Science, Health, and Technology collaborated with the Black History Month Committee to bring Avery August, Ph.D., to campus. August, who is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor and Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Cornell University, shared his story of overcoming adversity to achieve success as a minority in science. Additionally, August is the co-director of the Cornell Center for Health Equity at Cornell University. His research focuses on understanding the immunological basis for the balance of inflammation and pathology.
On February 13, the Charles Evans Inniss Library unveiled a permanent book display devoted to civil rights and social justice. In addition to presenting the book display the collaborative event hosted by the Library, MEC’s 50th Anniversary Committee, the Department of Public Administration and the Black History Month Committee, featured a panel discussion on current issues such as health care, housing, criminal justice, and economic development. The panel, which was moderated by Public Administration Professor Wallace Ford, included Jennifer Jones Austin, CEO of the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies; Dr. Don Dayson, physician and former associate professor at Columbia University School of Medicine; Public Administration Professor Gregorio Mayers Esq.; and Public Administration Adjunct Professor Richard Hurley, Esq. Student Government Association President, Sakia Fletcher, also gave remarks.
The new Civil Rights bookshelf on the main floor of the library features 100 books. The library purchased the new books for the project with funds from a Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO CCDA) grant.
