Breast Cancer Awareness Breakfast

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Medgar Evers College kicked off the month with a fundraising breakfast. The annual breakfast, organized by the Office of Student Life and Development and the Office of Health Services, raised nearly $2,000 for the American Cancer Society. One in eight women and one in about 900 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their life, according to breastcancer.org. Amani Reece, Director of Student Life and Development, said the breakfast is a way to support research and recognize those whose life has been touched by breast cancer.

“We honor those who have passed on, stand in solidarity with those who are courageously fighting against this disease and raise awareness and funds to eradicate breast cancer,” said Reece.

Dr. Sheilah Paul, Dean of the School of Education, and Medgar Evers College student Joella Feracho, both shared their stories of being breast cancer survivors. Althea Willie, Director of the Office of Health Services, said their journey from discovery to remission moved the audience.

“It was very heartfelt,” Willie added. “No one in the audience was left without a sense of love and admiration for the strength and commitment each individual continues to give in the fight against breast cancer.

Mercedes Narcisse, a registered nurse from the Greater Brooklyn Gastroenterology Care clinic, and Jocelin Keglar, from the American Cancer Society, educated attendees about breast health and self-exams.

For the remainder of the month, pink and black paraphernalia will be available for purchase. All proceeds will support the American Cancer Society. On Sunday, October 20, the American Cancer Society will bring its Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk to the Coney Island Boardwalk. A team from the College, the Medgar Evers Striders, will participate in the walk. To join the Medgar Evers Striders team at the Making Strides Walk, sign up by CLICKING HERE!
