Arts Alive 2018!

Social justice issues were at the heart of several performances at the Dr. Iola Thompson’s Arts Alive Extravaganza. Hosted by the College’s Department of Mass Communications, Creative and Performing Arts, and Speech, student performers demonstrated through dance, theater, and visual arts the connection between art and social justice movements.

Performances touched on such issues as police brutality and immigration policies. In one of the presentations, performers in red costumes entered the stage carrying bold signs with names of people who were victims of police brutality. They chanted, Say the name, say the name, as they appeared on stage. The organizers also included acts that captured the spirit of the holiday season.

Arts Alive supports a diverse range of locally-based visual arts, theater, dance, and music. Each semester students have an opportunity to display the talents they have developed during classroom instruction. The program is inclusive and inspires all in the department to work together.
