For Betty Ortiz-Gonzalez, a member of the Class of 2018, Medgar Evers College (MEC) was more than just an academic institution — it was a home that welcomed her with open arms and shaped her future. Originally from the Dominican Republic, Betty moved to the United States with aspirations of higher education but faced significant challenges, including learning a new language and navigating the complexities of college life as a first-generation student.

A new beginning at Medgar Evers College

Betty chose Medgar Evers College because it was the only institution that embraced her, offering not just an education, but a community. The SEEK program, in particular, provided her with invaluable support, treating her like family from day one.

“The SEEK program welcomed me with immense enthusiasm and made me feel at home,” she recalls.

However, adjusting to life at MEC was not without its obstacles. Betty struggled with English, felt disconnected from older peers, and lacked familial guidance in navigating college life. But rather than letting these challenges define her experience, she sought help from MEC’s writing center, English tutors, and most importantly, her professors.

Through office hours and mentorship, she not only improved academically, but built lasting relationships that helped her succeed beyond the classroom.

The journey beyond MEC

Graduating with a degree in Biology, Betty embarked on a path that led her to incredible academic and professional achievements. She completed a Post-Baccalaureate program at Tufts University, where she co-authored a scientific publication. Currently, she is in her fifth year of a Ph.D. program at The Rockefeller University, pushing the boundaries of scientific research.

Her accomplishments include receiving multiple travel awards to present her research at international conferences, speaking at Harvard University symposia, and being appointed an Equity Fellow by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Dean. Through it all, her time at MEC remained a foundation for her success.

“MEC made me determined, resilient, and resourceful. It taught me to embrace new experiences and to be of service to younger generations who share a similar journey,” she said.

Cherished memories & staying connected

Among her fondest memories at MEC are the moments spent in the SEEK office, where she could unwind, study, and form lifelong friendships. As a SEEK mentor, tutor, and instructor, she found her passion for guiding others, motivating students to embrace science and strive for excellence.

Even today, Betty stays connected with her alma mater through continuous communication with friends and SEEK staff via LinkedIn and social media. She remains committed to inspiring the next generation of MEC students.

Words of wisdom for MEC alumni & students

To those facing challenges similar to hers, Betty offers this advice:

“Do not underestimate yourself. Be present and build a strong community. Create a network of people who will speak your name positively in rooms where you are not present. Always say yes to opportunities—you never know which one will be the key to your next big break. And most importantly, use those experiences to build a strong CV.”

Life beyond the lab

Outside of her academic and professional pursuits, Betty is an adventurous foodie who loves exploring the diverse culinary landscape of New York City. On a more personal note, she shares that motherhood has been a defining part of her journey, having had her child during her first and second years of graduate school.

“Motherhood has made me a more organized and efficient scientist. It keeps me focused and motivated to finish my Ph.D.,” she says proudly.

Betty Ortiz-Gonzalez is a shining example of what it means to persevere, embrace opportunities, and give back to others.

Her journey from Medgar Evers College to The Rockefeller University stands as an inspiration to current students and fellow alumni alike.
