For Patricia Cummings-Riley, Medgar Evers College (MEC) was the perfect choice—offering a reputable nursing program, a strong legacy, and the convenience of being close to home. It was at MEC that she cultivated the skills, knowledge, and resilience that propelled her to the top of her field as the Director of Nursing at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

Overcoming challenges with family support

While her experience at MEC was largely positive, Patricia did face the challenge of commuting safely after late-evening classes. However, she leaned on her parents for support, ensuring she could focus on her studies without compromise.

Her motivation remained steadfast throughout her academic journey, driven by her goal of becoming a competent nursing professional, her unwavering faith, and the encouragement of her family.

Patricia’s time at MEC left an indelible mark on her career. After earning her associate’s degree, she returned in 2006 to complete her Bachelor’s in Nursing. The college’s culture and legacy instilled in her a relentless pursuit of excellence — a quality that has defined her career ever since.

Patricia has built an impressive 20-year nursing career, advancing through the ranks to become Director of Nursing. She has obtained a Master’s in Nurse Executive Leadership and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Healthcare Administration. Additionally, she holds an NE-BC certification, a prestigious credential in nurse leadership.

One of her most remarkable career moments was administering former Vice President Kamala Harris’s first COVID-19 vaccine — an experience that underscored her commitment to public health. She is also a health education contributor to a local weekly podcast, reaching over one million viewers with critical healthcare insights.

A passion for advocacy and lifelong learning

Beyond her professional achievements, Patricia remains passionate about advocating for healthcare equity. She believes that access to quality healthcare should be a fundamental right, and she continues to use her platform to drive meaningful conversations on the topic.

Her time at MEC wasn’t all about nursing — one of her fondest memories includes taking a theater class where she showcased her acting skills through two monologues for her final grade. This experience reflects her well-rounded approach to education and personal growth.

Patricia stays engaged with her alma mater by following events on social media and maintaining relationships with former colleagues. Her advice to current students and fellow alumni is clear:
