PBI/Faculty/student Mentor-ship Program (FMP) offers invaluable academic and research experience to all juniors and seniors with a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.7 who would like to prepare for graduate or professional school. Whether you continue on to graduate school or begin a career upon graduation, FMP is an excellent way to build lasting academic and professional relationships and develop research skills.

Peer Mentoring/Coaching:

The purpose of the PBI Mentoring Program at Medgar Evers is to assist first-year students in making a successful transition to college. The program, which is open to all first-year and transfer multicultural students, aims to empower individual student participants by providing them with a member of Medgar faculty/staff and multicultural student body who will guide, offer information, and support the student throughout his/her initial year of enrollment.

Peer Mentor: Current MEC Juniors & Seniors provide guidance in Communication, Decision Making, Time Management, Organization and Leadership skills.

The Peer Mentor plays a vital role in assisting the PBI office in its continuous efforts to administer a comprehensive program that will positively impact first year multicultural students who matriculate at the Medgar Evers College. The Peer Mentor leader will fulfill tasks which will enhance the PBI office in its endeavors to foster the educational, career, financial, personal, social, and spiritual development of multicultural students.

Programming for probation students: The PBI and FYP academic transformation & Success initiative is designed to address the academic, social, financial, and psychological challenges faces by freshmen students on academic probation. The goal is to decrease the amount of time it takes a Freshmen student on academic probation to regain good academic standing and persist to Sophomore status and beyond by developing internal network that supports students, an academic success plan, inform and equip students with information to create a financial plan, promote student engagement, as well as providing peer to peer interaction via peer mentors.

Peer Mentor Job Descriptions

Purpose of the Mentoring Program:

The purpose of the PBI Mentoring Program at Medgar Evers is to assist first-year students in making a successful transition to college. The program, which is open to all first-year and transfer multicultural students, aims to empower individual student participants by providing them with a member of Medgar faculty/staff and multicultural student body who will guide, offer information, and support the student throughout his/her initial year of enrollment. Predominantly Black Institutions (PBI) PEER MENTORS help mentees identify and utilize the campus and community resources necessary for academic and social success at Medgar Evers. They help create conditions where mentees feel comfortable sharing their perspectives on global issues. In addition, they also build strong relationships with mentees through small group activities and one-on-one meetings.

Role of the Peer Mentor:

The Peer Mentor position is a paraprofessional and undergraduate student staff member of the Office of PBI. The Peer Mentor plays a vital role in assisting the PBI office in its continuous efforts to administer a comprehensive program that will positively impact first year multicultural students who matriculate at the Medgar Evers College. The Peer Mentor leader will fulfill tasks which will enhance the PBI office in its endeavors to foster the educational, career, financial, personal, social, and spiritual development of multicultural students.

Duties

• Maintain a roster of 15-20 mentees.
• Schedule and facilitate individual meetings with mentees.
• Schedule weekly check-in sessions where mentees can discuss any issues, questions or concerns. Minimum 2 hours / week.
• Organize 3 Mentor Activities per quarter where each mentor, their coordinator, and their mentees come together as a family.
• Attend weekly staff meetings
• Attend all Medgar-wide events unless an excused absence is given.
• Complete bi-weekly Reflection Sheets and submit them to mentor coordinators by the specified due dates.
• Complete daily Mentee Interaction Logs and keep them updated online in real time.
• Develop a Mentoring Action Plan (MAP), which will guide mentoring activities.
• Check e-mail DAILY and respond to coordinator and administrative staff e-mails within 24 hours.
• Develop and maintain a working knowledge of common campus resources and refer mentees as necessary.
• Participate in professional development activities and skill building workshops to improve mentoring skills.
• Represent PBI at campus and community events.
• Work with campus units to conduct outreach to recruit students for the PBI Program.
• Required Skills and Qualifications
• Ability to communicate with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, Strong leadership skills & Strong public speaking and facilitation skills.
• Ability to plan, organize, and execute events in collaboration with other mentors and campus units.
• Familiarity with media and social networking tools used to communicate with mentees.
• Other duties as assigned

Compensation

Peer Mentors will earn $15.00 per hour for time spent and facilitating mentoring sessions.
