What Does Leap to Teacher Program Offer?

Pre-College Preparation Classes

The SLU free College Preparation Program offered strives to prepare adult learners for success in credit-bearing, college-level classes by teaching the reading, writing, math, and study skills required in general education courses across CUNY. Students who pass this course with a 70% or higher will fulfill the CUNY proficiency requirement. At NO COST, this program includes:

• Four instructional hours per class per week
• 1-to-1 tutoring sessions
• 1-to-1 CUNY pre-admissions advisement
• Test-review workshops
• Student success workshops, including “Mastering Anxiety” and “Writing an Academic Essay”

All classes and services will be held virtually until further notice.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

READING/WRITING

This combined class is geared toward adults interested in refreshing their English skills before beginning credit classes, as well as for those who do not yet meet CUNY’s proficiency requirements.

Students are required to complete both the reading and writing portions of the class. The overall work will be focused on reading and understanding a variety of texts, in addition to summarizing, expressing, and developing ideas through writing. Students will receive a reading grade and a writing grade, both of which factor in attendance, effort, completion of work, quality of work, test scores, and homework. Those who perform well in this class will leave with the skills necessary for success in general education English classes, required across all CUNY campuses.

Homework is an essential and required part of this class; be prepared for 6-8 hours of homework per week.

CUNY Reading/Writing Proficiency Requirement

At the end of this course, students will take a final Reading test as well as the CUNY Writing Assessment Test (CATW). Students will receive two grades, one for Reading and one for Writing. Each final grade is calculated by 65% of the class grade and 35% of the final reading test or CATW score.

Students who earn a 70 average or better for their final reading grade will meet the CUNY reading proficiency requirement.

Students who earn a 70 average or better for their final writing grade will meet the CUNY writing proficiency requirement.

ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA

The class is designed for adults who already have basic math skills and need to learn or relearn elementary algebra before beginning credit classes, or to meet CUNY’s proficiency requirements.

The class begins with a brief review of basic math and then quickly progresses to the subjects necessary for success in general education math classes, required across all CUNY campuses.

Elementary Algebra is an intense class that covers a great deal of material in a short time. Homework is an essential part of the class; be prepared for 6-8 hours of homework per week.

CUNY Math Proficiency Requirement

At the end of this course, students will take the CUNY Elementary Algebra Final Exam (CEAFE). The final course grade is calculated by 65% of the class grade and 35% of the CUNY CEAFE score.

Students who earn a 70 average or better for their final course grade will meet the CUNY math proficiency requirement.

CLASS SCHEDULE

A new semester of classes begins in February 2021 with the following schedule:

• Evening Reading/Writing: Mondays & Wednesdays from 6:00-8:00 pm
• Daytime Reading/Writing: Tuesdays & Thursdays from 12:30-2:30
• Elementary Algebra: Tuesdays & Thursdays from 6:00-8:00 pm

REQUIREMENTS

Requirements for participation in the program are:

• 21 or older
• High school diploma or high school equivalency
• Ability to attend all classes with the exception of two excused absences
• Ability to complete 6-8 hours of homework per week
