The Percy E. Sutton (SEEK) Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge (SEEK) Program, one of the major initiatives of The City University of New York (CUNY), was created by the Board of Higher Education of The City University in 1964. SEEK is designed for students who require financial and academic support to complete a college education. Students in the program receive up to ten semesters of economic and academic support while meeting the requirements for a baccalaureate degree.
On July 15, 2011, the New York State Assembly renamed the SEEK Program in honor of the Honorable Percy Ellis Sutton and provided the following justification:
A political pioneer, The Honorable Percy Ellis Sutton, as a member of the New York State Assembly created the Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge (SEEK) Program in 1966. This program allowed thousands of promising students from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to attend college at one of the City Universities with the help of State funding.
The SEEK Program offers a unique and supportive educational opportunity to students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, many of whom have had inadequate academic preparation for
college-level coursework. SEEK was designed to assist students with the intellectual potential to succeed in college who lack the educational foundation and economic resources necessary to pursue a
degree.This bill is introduced to honor the memory of this tremendous individual and the countless individuals who he helped throughout his lifetime (Bill number A09512, July 15, 2011, New York State Assembly).
Basic Skills instruction, individual and group counseling, tutorial services, and a financial aid stipend for education expenses are provided to each Special Programs/SEEK student. Funding of these supportive services is provided by The New York State Higher Education Opportunity Program Act. The major objectives of the SEEK Program at Medgar Evers College are:
1. To provide a permanent and structured program of special assistance to selected students who require and can utilize supportive services to overcome educational and economic disadvantages, to obtain a quality college education, and to expand the career and social options available to them.
2. To provide, by means of special funding, a range of intensive supportive services (as provided for under the Higher Education Opportunity Act) to aid each Special Programs student to bridge, as successfully and expeditiously as possible, the gap between basic skills instruction and the regular college curriculum.
3. To explore, develop, and demonstrate innovative techniques to enable students to achieve their academic goal.
